A LINE IN THE SAND
LAVOIR II
This installation is part of an ongoing research about lavoirs, 19th century washhouses in rural France. In my spatial work I give form to the parts of the washhouse that form the spaces in between the architecture: the hole of the water bassin, the hole of the impluvium roof, and in this case, the holes eroded in the stone tiles, created by the shoes of the washerwomen while washing clothes in a kneeled position. Imprints of the traces were made using clay, of which plaster molds were made, becoming a new version of the stone tiles and a tool to make a positive imprint of the eroded shapes. These imprints were all made at the "Lavoir du Petit Saint Jean" in Saint Sauveur en Puisaye.
